Developing mathematics-specific pedagogy in Initial Teacher Education
On 25 March 2017, The Joint Mathematical Council of the United Kingdom published recommendations on Developing mathematics-specific pedagogy in Initial Teacher Education. The proposed core standards for ITT (DfE, 2016) provide some additional information for providers of Initial Teacher Education regarding the content of programmes, but contain little about subject-specific pedagogy. We hope the JMC document will provide some welcome guidance for all those working with trainee mathematics teachers at primary and secondary level as to appropriate approaches to developing pedagogy for teaching mathematics. The document was developed initially at a JMC workshop and then developed further, with particular input from the committee of the Association of Mathematics Education Teachers. The further reading section in the document provides links to additional material, including case studies. Publication of this document is timely, particularly given the publication in February 2017 of comprehensive Standards for preparing teachers of mathematics by the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators in the USA.
